The London Company is seeking a Client Portfolio Manager to join our team in Richmond, VA. Key criteria for success include a strong work ethic and deep knowledge of the investment industry. The goal of the position is to effectively communicate the firm’s investment process and performance expectations while educating clients and the internal salesforce. The role will incorporate organizational, technical, and interpersonal skills that will help lead, inspire, and shape our future in a collaborative work environment.

Position

This critical position is an important member of the investment team responsible for management of London Company portfolios. Key responsibilities include client service and marketing, portfolio management, and risk management. The Client Service role includes providing firm, product, and market updates to clients, consultants, and our own internal marketing department. A strong knowledge of the investment process is extremely important. The Risk Officer role highlights portfolio positioning, potential style drift, as well as unintended bets across the various portfolios to ensure that each portfolio’s factor exposures are consistent with the firm’s investment process. This position is wide-ranging and will work with multiple departments within the firm. The role will report to the Chief Investment Officer and is expected to promote a healthy, positive culture in alignment with London’s mission, vision, and values.

Key Leadership Responsibilities –

Client Service:

  • Represent the firm in various meetings throughout the year, both in person and on phone/video calls.
  • Effectively communicate information regarding past performance, trading activity, the thesis for any holding, the outlook, etc.
  • Educate clients/consultants and the marketing department about London’s portfolios, holdings, risks, outlook, etc.
  • Represent the investment team in finals presentations and be prepared to give a high level or in-depth presentation and actively participate in Q&A sessions.
  • Assist with numerous client reports throughout the year.
  • Write monthly/quarterly/YTD attribution and market commentary for all portfolios.
  • Maintain portfolio characteristics for all strategies.
  • Train and educate the sales/marketing department on portfolio and market communications to ensure the team is up-to-date and aware of activity as well as keeping consistent external messaging.
  • Be a key contributor to the firm’s portfolio messaging: Who we are, how we performed and why, how we are positioned, etc.
  • Write concise reviews of stocks or issues during the year affecting the portfolio.
  • Contribute to the firm’s market observations by monitoring and interpreting key macro-economic data.
  • Write occasional white papers reinforcing the key tenants of our investment process.
  • Educate clients and the internal marketing department on specific drivers of the broader economy. While London follows a bottom-up process, maintaining a solid understanding of various macroeconomic variables and their impact on the broader market and relative performance of London portfolios is important.

Portfolio Manager:

  • Be a member of investment team managing multiple portfolios following a bottom-up process.
  • Possess a strong understanding of the investment thesis for every holding in any TLC portfolio. Be able to discuss why we purchased shares in a company and why we still own them.
  • Update our internal workbook that includes a brief write up of each position and trading activity.
  • Attend and actively participate in weekly research meetings.
  • Send periodic updates on holdings.

Risk Officer:

  • Highlight any holdings where the position size may be creating excess risk or where we may be using aggressive assumptions to arrive at our estimate of intrinsic value.
  • Maintain data using Style Analytics and be able to explain the output to the investment team, marketing department, and clients/consultants. This includes:
    • Factors that are driving the market over various periods.
    • How different benchmarks are performing.
    • How TLC portfolios are positioned based on various factors. Is this consistent with our process? If not, why?
    • Any unintended bets in TLC portfolios? Why?
    • Review overall portfolio risk (beta, tracking error, active share, largest positions)
    • Assist with trading decisions made by the investment team. Ensure portfolio risks are well understood.
  • Contest behavioral bias regarding stocks among the investment team members.
  • Assist in the determination of product capacity.

Qualifications and Skills

  • 10+ years of industry experience in a similar position
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, or accounting required
  • MBA and/ or CFA strongly preferred
  • Deep, comprehensive understanding of markets and all aspects of portfolio construction and management
  • Exceptional analytical skills and a passion for the investment industry
  • Impactful interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to speak well in small and large groups while keeping on topic and adjusting as needed.
  • Business acumen and exemplary work ethic
  • Time management is key to this position
  • Self-starter, reflects confidence, and well-polished
  • Proficient with Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Experience with Factset: generate and comprehend attribution
  • Knowledge of Style Analytics or other risk software a plus
  • Willingness to travel, as needed, for both clients and prospects
